About 200 years ago the first «Russian salons» were organized by the efforts of Princess Zinaida Volkonskaya, who united the greatest writers and artists of the epoch: P. Viazemsky, I. Turgenev, K.Brullov, A. Ivanov, Stendhal, Walter Scott, J. F. Cooper.
At the «Russian salons» in Rome, Gogol first read the first chapters of «Dead Souls» in public.
